about

Blood Orange was recorded in Ben Rawlin’s former studio in August 2019. Knowing the arrangement of the song well before going into studio, the rhythm section was recorded in 10 minutes before moving on to the next song. There was lots more to be done with the song following, recording or designing parts in lots of different places, from at home in his old practice room to Kaph on drury st while waiting for a friend, from Zaska’s home studio to a play at the fringe festival recording an actor spontaneously drag metal pipes across a concrete floor.

Nnic once again lends her vocals to the track giving a counterpart to J Smith in the chorus, which speaks of a couple deciding to continue their love and reigniting their passion for one another.

This is the second single from J Smith’s highly anticipated debut album ‘(…) And you chose not to laugh’, due for release on the 28th of May.

lyrics

Blood Orange - James Smith (ex © 2019)

You know my body

You’ve put in the miles

And I know how your pulse feels

Tryna catch up with mine

We came to see a blood orange moon

And shiver up in a tent

I’ve come to see you in a different light

Oh, you know that wasn’t what I meant

Passion ain’t built to last

Didn’t see it coming, didn’t see it coming

We all get a second chance

This time we’ll see it coming, time we’ll see it coming

Such silent silence

I can’t hear myself thinking out loud

I hope my heart speaks up

It will speak a truth I won’t allow

Passion ain’t built to last

Didn’t see it coming, didn’t see it coming

We all get a second chance

This time we’ll see it coming, time we’ll see it coming

Passion ain’t built to last

Didn’t see it coming, didn’t see it coming

We all get a second chance

This time we’ll see it coming, time we’ll see it coming

Learning piano from the age of 5, music became an essential part of James' life and it only expanded when finding the guitar and other instruments. With music being a medium in which James could process tragedy or moments of elation, it became an integral part of his life.

Baby Farm is out now, the crops are ready for harvest and the livestock are screaming.
