about
When I had the vision for how I wanted In the Death of Something Beautiful to sound I knew I wanted my brother Dan to play the drums; the groove he can create is unlike any other and it fit the song perfectly. It was recorded on that famous day in Aug 2019 along with 5 other songs by the brilliant Ben Rawlins, and features Donagh Seaver O'Leary. There's a different feel to this song. I recorded a brass section along with some heavy, atmospheric guitars at home which adds to the dark atmosphere of the song.
In the Death of Something Beautiful was a hard song to write. My wife and I had just experienced our first pregnancy loss and it really rocked us. Although we got closer sharing something so tragic, it brought up so much confusion within both of us separately. I felt self conscious of it for quite some time knowing that the rawness of it might be hard to experience for the listener, but when it happened to us, we knew no-one who'd been through it, or at least we thought we didn't. Turns out so many people go through it, so many of my family, even some friends who kept it to themselves, so I hope this lets someone realise that they know someone too, and that they don't have to go through it alone. I'm pleased to say that we are expecting our first child, a rainbow baby as they call it, and everything has been going so smoothly. We feel so blessed.
lyrics
Was told I’d be a father
40 weeks premature
Now I don’t know If I’m escaping
Or a child is being rescued
Cause I’m carrying my demons
And they swore they’d raise her too
Is it wrong to see a blessing
In the death of something beautiful
It’s a burden to know you deserve
All the pain coming to you, the pain coming to you
It’s a circle so it feels good
Makes the pain worth going through
Now no matter what I’m carrying
I just wanna hold my child
Cause I feel like I’ve had my practice
Carrying the weight of the world my short life
It’s a burden to know you deserve
All the pain coming to you, the pain coming to you
It’s a circle so it feels good
Makes the pain worth going through
The pain worth going through
The pain worth going through
The pain worth going through
The pain worth going through
What pains worth going through

Learning piano from the age of 5, music became an essential
part of James' life and it only expanded when finding the guitar and other instruments. With music being a medium in which James could process tragedy or moments of elation, it became an integral part of his life.
